Frequency Asked Question
The dark appearance of black diamonds is due to dark inclusions or, more often, color treatments. Most black diamonds undergo treatment to achieve a deep green hue that looks black, but remains transparent.
Colored diamonds are typically cut to enhance the intensity of their color, rather than to maximize light reflection. The ideal cut is one that showcases the most appealing face-up color.
Most diamonds used in jewelry fall within the range of colorless to light yellow, graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Diamonds that are closer to colorless are generally more valuable. Diamonds with richer yellow hues (beyond Z) are graded differently and assigned a fancy-color grade. For these colored diamonds, a more vibrant color usually results in a higher value.
Diamonds outside GRSI’s D-to-Z scale are considered colored (fancy-color) diamonds, including all colors except colorless, light yellow, or brown. These diamonds are graded by color strength, from Faint to Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark, and Fancy Deep. Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid diamonds generally have higher value.
While there is consistent worldwide demand for turquoise with fine color and no visible inclusions, some collectors prefer turquoise with spiderweb matrix patterns. Black matrix is typically the most sought-after for contrast, but matrix can also appear in brown, yellow, and other colors.
Each mine produces a variety of quality levels. For gemstones of exceptional quality, an independent origin determination from a reputable laboratory like GRSI enhances its provenance, as does a rich history, such as that of the Colombian emerald region.
